I know I haven't been doing research in ages, but having got FMP for a £1 for a month I am trying to bang my head against a brickwall for another go :d I am trying to get to grips with FMP, I always had Ancestry before which seems so much easier to navigate :o Am I right in thinking you can't look for marriages, baptisms etc in London as I can't find those anywhere :o

I am trying to find a Lilly JONES, born about 1862 according to the 1881 census.
RG11
Piece number 450
Folio 38
Page 27
Record set 1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census

She is listed as a visitor but I can't find her birth, or the 1871 census with her on nor a marriage :( I'm really struggling as I think I am missing ways of searching on FMP that I found obvious on Ancestry
Thanks all & sorry it's such a tricky name lol ;)

I don't think that FMP has images for London births, marriages and deaths.

There is a birth for a Lilly Theresa Jones in 1860 here on FMP:

Lilly Theresa Jones married in 1886: http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=bmd%2fm%2f1886%2f3%2faz%2f000150%2f235

Thanks Shona that would explain it then  No wonder I am going cross eyed!! I really am struggling with FMP, so glad it was cheap as I don't think I will be able to find much at all :o

Lily Theresa's baptism is here http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fb%2f902290547%2f1

FMP have Westminster baptisms etc, the London Docklands Ancestors database (baptisms) and some Middlesex parishes.

Don't think the above is your Lily - she's here with parents in 1881, although her father has gone up in the world from cowkeeper to auctioneer! http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbc%2f1881%2f0008044970

Thanks Sue, but she isn't the same one in the 1881 census I posted at the start :d

How the hell do you put the place of birth in the census search in FMP? I tried keyword & I can't see anywhere else where I can put it ;( With Jones it's essential as they aren't all born in Wales!! :D

So, for reference, this is the 1881 census entry that you have:
59 Cannon St Rd, St George in the East
John Flintoff Head Widr 65 Grocer Yorkshire Deighton
Reginald M " Son Unm 28 Grocers Assistant Cheshire Nantwich
Lilly Jones Visitor Unm 19 Milliner London

There is a Lillias A Jones, 28, single, born Brixton London, at 20 Holland Road, Hove, Sussex, on the 1891 census but she is a maid, not a milliner. No relatives with her as she is a live-in servant. (Corresponding birth reg is Lillias Ann Jones Jan-Mar 1860 Lambeth.)

Yes Kate, thank you :) John Flintoff was married to Emma JONES which is my line ;) I am trying to tie in this Lilly/Lily/Lillian somewhere as I am fairly sure she is related

I think I found that Lillias living with her mother Lillias in an earlier census & discounted her.

You have to choose a particular census from the A-Z of "record sets", and then you get boxes for Birth Town, Birth Place, and Birth County. Apparently London can be a Birth Town or a Birth County, but not a Birth Place.

Anyway, I found Lillias Jones in Kensington on the 1881 census, so she isn't your Lilly, either.

Oh well thank you anyway :o I'll try what you suggested to search the census, it seems so much more time consuming than Ancestry!

The other obvious candidate is Lilian Mary Jones born Jul-Sep 1863 Marylebone, but she is with her family in 1881 and not a milliner.

There is a Miss Lily Jones, 34, servant, travelling from Liverpool to Southampton on 1 Jan 1896.
