Have just received a will for Lawence Green 1874, to one of his sons he is giving 3 houses with gardens, Outbuildings and appurtenances(sp) there to together with the right of pump and sewer.

I think the pump would be for water, but did they have some kind of sewer back then ?

Any help appreciated.

Yes, in a word. Most urban areas had a public sewage system by then, not so many rural districts, it depended! Thus - USD = Urban Sanitary District, RSD = Rural Sanitary District.

Also many larger houses had private sewage arrangements which would require a sewage pipe running across their own, and maybe other people's, land.

Thank you OC, this man seems to have had quite a few houses in several streets, as well as land and a beer house.

His occupation was a grocer and he only lists Ireland as place of birth on all the census, so another brick wall.
