and I wondered if there were some pages missing in the transcription.

However I found it on FMP which was a great relief.

Edwin George English birth Q1 1848 at Bethnal Green

So I don't really need any help but I wanted to point it out in case anyone else had someone with a surname starting with Eng..... in the first quarter of that year and hadn't been able to find them..

Ancestry received much of their earlier GRO data from FreeBMD. There's a thread on here somewhere about errors that have been found in the transfer of the FreeBMD data to Ancestry (mainly entries turning up on Ancestry in completely the wrong year). This could be yet another form of error, or perhaps not all Q1 1848 records were transcribed by FreeBMD when Ancestry purchased the information.

I'll see if I can find any old threads about the other problem which was pretty extensive (last time I looked Ancestry were refusing to do anything about it! lol)

Two threads about the problems with the switch of data from FreeBMD to Ancestry:

FreeBMD is still good for BMD GRO records and Family Search use the same transcriptions as findmypast if anyone doesn't have a findmypast sub:

Merry I wondered what had happened and I just thought it worth mentioning so that other folk might find it worth their while checking out FMP for any missing ancestors. It certainly seemed strange though and like you said it seems as though that particular quarter for 1848 is missing. So, is it all that quarter for the whole alphabet or just that page that has been missed.

Ancestry have 140,747 birth registrations for 1848 Q1 and findmypast have 140,842. No doubt there will always be a difference, in the numbers but those 'English' births will be part of the difference in this case. It's a good job you decided to check elsewhere!
