On Lydia Rhodes baptism on 24 May 1801 at Bradford St Peters it just gives the name of her father as Jonathan Rhodes - no mother's name or place of abode. Subsequent census's gives her year of birth 1803, 1802 and 1799 in Bradford or Wibsey.

I intially thought that the Jonathan Rhodes who married Hannah Scholfield in 1803 was the father as Lydia in the 1851 census had said she was born 1803. Then I found her baptism in 1801 and realised it couldn't be as his name wouldn't have been on Lydia's baptism if marriage took place after.

Then I found a Jonathan Rhodes marriage in 1796 to a Sarah Stead/Head but haven't been able to find anything else about them.

Now I'm wondering if the Jonathan who married in 1796 is the same one who married in 1803. However there are numerous Jonathan or John Rhodes how on earth can I locate the right one?

There is more information on the baptism record - Lydia Dr of Jonathan Rhodes of Bowling, Smith.
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2256/32355_249694-00271/?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=2256&iid=32355_249694-00271&fn=Lydia&ln=Rhodes&st=d&ssrc=&pid=8408622

Not quite so clear on this copy but it is still there:

Another child of Jonathan Rhodes of Bowling, smith:

William 3 Mar 1799

Then there is a Mary 23 Oct 1803, Joseph 24 Mar 1805, John 17 May 1807, but their father is Jonathan Rhodes of Bowling, husbandman.

Then Mary Ann D of Jonathan Rhodes of Shelf, smith. 21 Jan 1810.
William S of Jonathan Rhodes of Shelf, smith. 18 Oct 1812.

This site has Sarah down as a Stead, and the site homepage says you can email the site with the reference numbers for the marriage to get more information:

Ah, here is the actual PR entry for that marriage to Sarah Stead and it looks good as Jonathan is a blacksmith. It is classed as "banns" instead of "marriage" on ancestry which is why I didn't see it before:

Thank you so much Kite - how you find so much I just don't know.

I was going bog-eyed last night when I was trying to look.

I didn't spot the smith bit on Lydia's christening - I have great difficulty with reading parish records unless they're very clear.

I did find a death in 1826 for a Jonathan Rhodes age 52 of Bradford but there isn't an occupation.

I did find that death of son Jonathan in 1808 but couldn't find a baptism for him - will have another look.

Also the daughter Sarah in Shelf - can't tell how far away that is.

I wonder if the children of Jonathan Rhodes of Bowling - husbandman is the one who married Hannah Schofield and became a farmer.

Looking at Google maps, Shelf and Bowling seem to be fairly close to each other but Burley isn't near to them, unless there is another Burley.

Thanks Kite

FMP has the place of death for Jonathan jnr as Bierley - not sure how close that is to Bowling but the burial was at Bradford St Peter.

Ah yes, Bierley looks very close to Bowling on the map. That makes sense.

Thanks Kite for searching for me

This looks like Jonathan's late baptism father Abraham - but can't find marriage to find mother's name.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=WYorkPre1813&h=8396189&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t56603189_p48072480699_kpidz0q3d4807248069 9z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid

Looks like the Jonathan jnr was the son of Jonathan the husbandman born 1807 d 1808.

Looking at family search for baptisms there was the 1812 baptism of William Rhodes and his 2nd marriage in 1870 to Lucy A Keep in Chicopee, Hampden, Mass. USA. His parents were Jonathan Rhodes and Sarah Stead.

I looked for any marriages of Jonathan Rhodes a smith in the right timeline and only found Sarah Stead.

So it looks like they had

William b 1799 chr Bradford
Lydia b 1800 chr Bradford

then it looks like they moved to Sheffield and these are possible children

Matthew born 1803 Sheffield St Peter's Cathedral father Engineer Smith

Abraham born 1805 Sheffield father smith
Thomas born 1806 Sheffield can only find on family search so no occupation
James born 1807 Sheffield father whites A?
Hannah born 1809 Sheffield only on family search so no occupation

then moved to Shelf

Mary Ann born 1810 Shelf father smith
William born 1812 Shelf
Sarah born 1815 Shelf
