Which censuses have you found him on, Sally? I just looked quickly at the 1851 but couldn't see him.
Maybe he's the one aged 1 b Heaton, Durham in 1851? Father Peter a widower, who was married to Frances on the 1841 census. They are living in Bishop Auckland in 1851.

Help help help.........have just come back in, and am overwhelmed. Give me a few ticks and I will answer what I can with what I have.
Okay.........
Yes Merry, that was him on the 1851 census. At this point I have to apologise for putting up the post without checking all the information. I had better stand in the naughty corner. My excuse is that the wretched Downings have scrambled my brain cell.
Margaret, yes his wife was Jane Downing (hehe, sorry Merry) and she was his second wife, the first one dying shortly after their marriage. He did indeed live in Bramley eventually, and thank you so much for finding his death. I have only just started researching the Coopers seriously, and am very grateful for the help
Margaret, another thank you......that certainly looks like his birth, and the cert will give me his mother's maiden name.
Possible death for William's mum:
Deaths Mar 1851
COOPER Frances Auckland 24 8
Thanks Merry, I was just having a look and in 1851 William was a widower so that looks about right. There is a death of a newborn, Thomas Cooper, at the same time.

Sally
Are you missing him on any census now?
I don't think so Margaret. I will have to check tomorrow as I have to turn off now.
Thank you a million times for your time and trouble.
