Following on from Chris's December thread -

The National Library of Ireland is launching its free online digitized collection of Irish Catholic Parish Registers on July 8th.

I haven't found a specific link yet but this is the NLI's home page

As Julie mentioned in the earlier thread, the images will not be indexed or transcribed unfortunately.

There is a link on the NLI website homepage that says the records are going online at 2pm today. At the moment none of the links on there are working for me - I keep getting server error messages - so, hopefully that means they are counting down to 2pm. I have been eagerly awaiting these records, hoping to knock down a few brick walls.

*Paces up and down, waiting for 2 o'clock*

Here's the link to the search page:

I've looked at the two parishes I need. One doesn't cover the period I need and the other doesn't tell me anything I didn't know already!

So long as you know your parishes and dates, I find it very easy to use despite it not being indexed or transcribed.

Thanks for the link Ann.

I found my grandfather's baptism easily enough as I already had his baptismal certificate, and next I thought I'd quickly confirm OH's grandfather's and his siblings' baptisms from a list provided by a contact years ago. None were to be found so I'm hoping that the years and place were at least correct to narrow down the search. Next I'll have to settle down to search for the more difficult ones.

It's very helpful to be able to narrow down by year and month rather than trawl through whole registers, but the creative Latin takes a bit of deciphering!

The first person I tried to look up comes from Dublin.

There are 78 parishes in Dublin and that is assuming the year I have (consistent on all census) is correct.

There aren't registers for the one person I truly want. :(

Unfortunately for too many of mine I haven't a clue whereabouts in Ireland they're from.

Most of mine are from Galway but the registers aren't there for the years I need.

The one I really want (my 3xgt grandfather) is from Kiltormer in Galway. He was born around 1795 and the only registers on the site for Kiltormer are from about 1864 if memory serves me right. Far too late for what I want to know anyway.
