Hi,

I've come across a prison record on Ancestry for a Henry Eastwood at Wakefield in 1885 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=WestYorkPrison&h=124671&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t2883779_p-793779977_kpidz0q3d-793779977z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid

I was confident that this was my great x 3 grandfather William Henry Eastwood as the age, place of birth and occupation are all the same. Also my William on the 41/51/61 census was always known as Henry rather than William Henry. (I've still not found him on the 71 census). This record shows he has two alias as William Henry Eastwood (if its my man then this is his real name) but also of James Upwood.

But I've now found an 1861 criminal record of this Henry Eastwood on FMP which gives an alias of Joseph Upwood (different to James on Ancestry so unsure which one is wrong). Again, the occupation, age etc all fit my guy but what is now throwing me is that this record gives a list of his previous convictions under Upwood and then as Henry Eastwood and one of the conviction under Henry Eastwood is in 1857 for neglect of family. My William 'Henry' Eastwood didn't marry until 1866 where he shaved a few years off his age

Now I still haven't completely ruled this Henry Eastwood/Mr Upwood out but I can't find any records or newspaper clippings of the other convictions that might give further insight to who this guy was. I also cannot find any Upwood births in Sheffield circa 1834 which this guy was apparantly born.

Can anyone help find out who exactly this man is?

For reference, my guy is William Henry Eastwood who was born in Sheffield 14th April 1834 (from his baptism record) to Philip Eastwood & Mary Ann Bennet. He married Harriet Fowler in Sheffield on the 30th July 1866. He's on the 41 census aged 7 with his parents who call him Henry. He's with his sister and her husband Thomas Armitage on the 61 census again called Henry. The 51 census I have for him is in Wakefield prison! Aged Henry Eastwood aged 17, File Cutter of Sheffield. No sign of him yet on the 71 census. He's using William H Eastwood on the 81 & 91 census with his wife. He dies in Sheffield 12th Oct 1893.

For reference, here is the link to the FMP image as it took me ages to find it:

Ancestry's World Archives Project is currently indexing the West Yorkshire Quarter Session Records, so maybe he will turn up in those when they go online.

I spent lot of time this morning trying to find anything more about (William) Henry without any success.

I couldn't find that fmp doc either until I searched under Upwood and it appeared!

There are two Henry Eastwoods on the 1841 census in Sheffield and the other one is a fork grinder's son, living Pea Croft.

My gut feeling is that your William Henry is entirely separate from the extremely unpleasant Henry Eastwood who was having all sorts of problems with the law, according to the newspapers, and that he is lurking somewhere other than in prison in 1851.

I tried to find that second Henry at a later date without success. I agree with that idea though!

Thank you everyone for looking at this and you are right Phoenix about the tattoo markings that were noted on the 1885 record. It does say E Mallinson! When I saw the conviction for the desertion of family I felt that there had to be two Henry Eastwood's but I couldn't see the other one anywhere. Thank you so much for all your help :)
