could someone with FMP please read the information regarding John Venables?

John Venables (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=tna%2fccc%2fpcom2%2f202%2f00271&parentid=tna%2fccc%2f2b%2fpcom2%2f01075110&highlights=%22%22)

He is second on the page under Robert Glenn, his co-accused.

Glenn was 17 and was sentenced to 2 months, Venables (OH's 2g grandfather) at 30 was transported for 7 years.

Tony, in the left-hand column it looks like the word ostler at the bottom.

In the right-hand column does it say 22 Mar, Leviathan, Portsmo? Sounds like a ship departing Portsmouth on 22 March to me.

I'm sure someone else will correct me and/or make out some more.

I got the Ostler part too, which ties in with something else I've seen, although I don't know what occupation it is.

He was transported for 7 years. I'm not sure if the word is prison. He came out on the Aurora but that doesn't mean you are wrong, they could have changed ships before he actually left.

The bit under his name I am really interested in. It has his age - 30, 5/5 Sal___ ___ ____ Herefd (I think) then ostler. I'm wondering if that is where he is from. His past is a bit (lot actually) of an unknown.

An ostler is a horse handler, a groom or whatnot.

I thought that might be a place of residence too, but I thought of Hertfordshire rather than Herefordshire. Don't know if that's right. It just looked like a "t" to me.

Hope someone else's eyes are considerably better than mine!

Thanks for the information and you could be right on the place too.

The Leviathan was a prison hulk; a ship that prisoners were sent to pending transportation.

His hulk record is on Ancestry, showing that he was transported to NSW on 26/6/1833:

Was that the trial details on the Old Bailey site? The various places mentioned in the article are all on the Essex/Hertfordshire border, so it makes sense he was from Hertford(shire), not Herefordshire.

The Leviathan was based in Portsmouth harbour. My 2x Great grandfather was sent to it for 7 years transportation in 1838, he still there in 1841 on the census and was given a royal pardon in 1842.

Thanks Kate for the translation. I would never have known that.

Possibly. I found a few records for him on FMP as well so maybe mentioned there too.

Your 2g grandfather was lucky but if John was also pardoned my OH would not be here.

Hertfordshire gives me a new place to search for birth details. A contact I made years ago decided he was born in Staffordshire but we couldn't find anything definitive there. So now I have a new place to search. :)

Yes Toni, if he hadn't have been pardoned subsequent generations would be totally different.
