I have a record of a William Lamb travelling on the vessel "Marion" on 22nd November 1843 to Van Dieman's Land.

The date of conviction was 12th July 1843.

I'm trying to establish who he was as OH's great-grandfather William Henry Lamb is missing in the UK from after the 1841 census until he reappears in 1871.
He was born and lived in Whitby, Yorkshire the only times I have located him.

It looks as though he was convicted for 7 years, but I don't know what the crime was or where he was from. He was convicted in Yorkshire.

Here is the criminal register entry, Elizabeth:

He was 40 years old and was convicted of Burglary, with a previous felony conviction.

Here he is in the Tasmanian convict musters (the second one may not be him, though):

Might be worth searching the Tasmanian name indexes to see if you can find out any more about him:

Sorry, this isn't your man.

According to his conduct record, the William Lamb who was tried in York in 1843 and transported on the Marion died in 1851.

Kate and Mary, thanks for your help. I'm not very proficient in this type of record.

I didn't think it would be our man, but where on earth he disappeared to is a mystery. He reappeared in Whitby before he married and seemed to be comfortably off with stocks and shares and shipping interests.

Thanks for the information, Kate.
Our William Henry Lamb was born in 1829.

It was highly unlikely to be yours Elizabeth. Not many returned to the UK. I've heard it happened but don't know of anyone.

The closest I know of is my 4g grandfather returned in 1822 to attend the Bigge commission but he did return to Australia and I can find no proof of his travels although something I've read said he did.
