Can anyone find Ellen?

Hi All,

I've been trying to find Ellen Grainger on the 1901 and/or the 1911 census for a while with no luck and hoping another pair of eyes might help :)

Ellen was born 18th May 1852 as Ellen King in Charlton Brook, Ecclesfield near Sheffield (sometimes they give Chapeltown instead of Ecclesfield) to parents William King & Mary Ann Hague. She marries William Grainger in December 1877 in Clapham, London. They are together with no children on both the 1881 & 1891 census at 30 Heath Road, Clapham but i've found no trace of either after the 91 census.

I am considering that they might have left the UK but i've found no trace of them elsewhere. Its worth noting that Ellen's sister Emily and her husband Tom Moorhouse left the UK to Australia in late 1883 and I wonder if it was possible the Graingers went there also.

Any help is much appreciated.

There is a public tree on ancestry which says that she was mentioned in her father's will dated 17 Mar 1894. The probate is shown as 1900 but Ellen is not one of the executors listed. They have put down a possible death for her Apr-Jun 1927 Knaresborough district but it doesn't look as though they have checked whether that is correct.

Hi Kate,

I actually have a copy of her father William's will so have just quickly read through it again and your right, it does reference her as Ellen wife of William Grainger but that's it. I guess that just tells us that she was alive as of the 17th March 1894. It doesn't state where she was living. William left some money to the children of his late daughter Emily who had died in Australia but it doesn't reference that those children were in Australia.

I don't think the Knaresborough death in 1927 is her. There was an Ellen Grainger living in Knaresborough area with a similar birth year and she was born in Ireland.

Do you know the names of William Grainger's parents, please, Claire, so I can search for him in the Australian deaths? I looked for Ellen in there but no luck.

From the marriage cert, I know his father was John Grainger, a farm labourer and his age on the census and the cert would suggest he was born 1843c. His birth place given as Somerton, Suffolk. I haven't looked for him before the marriage so unsure on his mother's name.

There is a possible marriage for Ellen in Oct-Dec 1896 Wandsworth district (which was the district for Clapham) to either Alexander Edward or James Berresford Walker, and this could be her in 1901:

There is an Ellen Edward death Jan-Mar 1933 Leeds North, age 80. The age would be right for your Ellen.
