I probably should know this, but is there anywhere online where I can find out why my OH's grandfather was awarded the MM in WW1?

He was Joseph Spiller SELDON and was a serjeant in the Devonshire Regt. at the time. His army number was 26061. He was killed at the Somme on 24 April 1918.

My great uncle was also awarded the MM and Bar, but he was in the Canadian Army (15 Bttn, Central Ontario Regt.). He was Edward Charles Lloyd KEY and was killed in France on 28 September 1918. I'd like to find out why he was awarded the MM & Bar too.

Supplement to the London Gazette 16 Jul 1918, p 8327, lists the award:
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30797/supplement/8327

Paging back to the start of that section, the heading reads "His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Military Medal for bravery in the Field to the undermentioned Non-commissioned Officers and Men:-"

but that doesn't give any specific info.

According to this site, "Most citations have been lost and we shall never know what the majority of these Devon men did." :(

Have you tried looking through regimental diaries, Sue?

Thanks Kite. No I haven't looked through the regimental diaries yet. I will need a long time without interruptions for that, something I don't have much of at the moment unfortunately.

Will add that to my 'to-do' list though.

Thanks again.
