61st of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's school, Haywards Heath to lose his life in WW1.
Albert was born on 25 August 1898 in Haywards Heath to William Henry Nye and Henrietta Nye, youngest of their children. They lived in Triangle Road. Albert became a baker possibly at the baker’s at the end of that road and enlisted in the Army aged 17 years and 1 month on 16th November 1914. His father had died earlier that year.
At the time of enlisting he was 5’ 11” tall and had a chest measurement of 39”, with dark brown eyes and black hair. He achieved the rank of Lance Corporal and served only in England because he was declared as medically unfit on 7th October 1917 due to tuberculosis, his character was described as “Very good” and it was recommended that he should spend 6 months in a sanatorium, and was given a pension of £1 7s 6d per week. He was sent home to 17 Triangle Road to await formal discharge from the army.
He died in Haywards Heath on 6 May 1918 of tuberculosis aged 19, and is buried in St Wilfrid’s churchyard.
