John Spiers and Sarah [Ellen] Rainbow were married in Nuneaton in the December Quarter of 1910.

I am going cross-eyed trying to find them on the 1911 census, without success.

I think I may possibly have found Sarah on the 1901 census with her family in Essex, but John eludes me there too.

Might anyone else have better luck than me?

Thanks in advance

Any idea how old either of them were?

Just to say she isn't the Sarah Ellen Spiers who died in Leicester in 1956 because that one was the wife of Curtis John Spiers, so Sarah E Hingley who married Curtis J Spiers in 1912.

could she have been 32 when she married and could she have been born in Liverpool ?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWTF-QR4
spelt as Speirs and not Spiers ??
found Sarah Ellen Rainbow b 1877 York
Sarah Ellen Rainbow b 1877 Coventry - sadly none born Liverpool - so this lady looks unlikely ....

Her middle name is Elizabeth not Ellen :):

Births Dec 1892
Rainbow Sarah Elizabeth Foleshill 6d 488

She's here in 1911, listed with her middle name and living with her husband and parents:

She's Elizabeth in 1901 too:

Thanks. I would be interested to know how you found him/them because John is still only coming up for me if I add in Hartshill, which I only know because you found him!

Erm.... I did several fruitless searches, but once I'd decided Sarah was a spinster, because there were Spiers/Rainbow birth regs after 1911 in the right place, I looked at all the BMDs for Sarah E Rainbow on FreeBMD and realised the most likely one was Sarah Elizabeth b 1892 in Foleshill district - up until that point I had only looked for Sarah Ellen because I thought that's what her name was!

I then looked for Sarah Rainbow b about 1892 in Warw* in 1901 and found nothing (because she was listed as Elizabeth!)

Then did a 1911 search for Sp*rs b 1892+/-2 in Warwickshire and happened to see John Spiers aged 20 listed as a boarder. Looked at him and .....voila!!

Right. I clearly need to be more inventive. I usually find with Ancestry that I put exact requirements in and just get thousands of irrelevant results, with the ones I want buried somewhere so I miss them.

You need to tick the "Match all terms exactly" box to stop that happening. At least that way you only get back exactly what you asked for - hence my using Sp*rs to cover whichever way round the i and the e were written/transcribed.

I've just done that and looked for John again. He's turned up 19th on a list of 21, behind lots of people named Spiers who have John as a middle name!

I'll see where he comes for me........

He comes up number 44 of 53 matches using the criteria I used this morning (Sp*rs b 1892+/-2 Keyword Warw*).

If I use his first name as well I only get two matches - him and one called Benjamin John Spiers b 1892 and living in Aston.

If I go on the "advanced search" from ancestry's home page (i.e. the one that searches everything) and put in surname Spiers, keyword Rainbow, without ticking the "match all terms exactly", that 1911 census entry comes up top of the list! Shame I didn't think of doing that yesterday!

I'm sure that FMP used to have a keyword search available, plus you could search for other names in the same household on the census searches, but I can't get it to do that now.

Yes it did and, no I can't either!
