I have checked this out on deaths and censuses but cannot find any other mention of a Thomas Straid.
Might be worth sending for with a ref check with James and Mary as parents.

That birth registration is also on West Midlands BMD, but it doesn't give mother's maiden name so you would have to order the cert to find out if it's him.

Yes, the occupation on the 1871 census does say Furnaceman. His occupation on the 1911 census is Labourer (I tried that on the free search and it comes up with him as a match)
