Sharon, can you post up the bit of the marriage cert that shows parents' names, please, and we'll have a go at deciphering them?

It looks like Crawford Braen (not sure about that!) Widow of Thomas Samson coal miner. Which I think means that Thomas Samson wasn't his father but they don't know who was. But hopefully we can find Robert's birth reg now and it will make things clearer.

Okay, the marriage is on FamilySearch, Thomas Samson married Craford Brown 3 Jul 1862, Muirkirk, Ayrshire.

Children of Thomas Samson and Cra(w)ford Brown on FamilySearch

(all born Muirkirk, "extracted" entries):
John 14 Feb 1860
Janet 7 Dec 1862
John 5 Dec 1864
Christina 27 Mar 1867
James 8 Feb 1870
Elizabeth 26 Jan 1872
William 9 Jan 1874

There is also a "submitted" entry for a Mary born about 1877 but that may or may not be correct.

So we need to look for Thomas's death in or after 1874 and Robert's birth, oh, and of course we should be able to find the family on the 1881 census now which should show whether Thomas was around then or not.

According to ancestry, Crawford was the head of household in 1881 and Mary age 4 was the youngest child, but you would have to look on Scotland's People to see whether Crawford is listed as a widow.

There are a few possible Robert Samson births at Muirkirk listed on Scotland's People, for instance 2 between 1881 and 1882. Unfortunately it doesn't let you specify mother's name on the search so you would have to view the results to work out which one is the right entry.

And there are 3 Thomas Samson deaths listed on Scotland's People at Muirkirk between 1872 and 1881 - one of those died in 1876 age 36 and I think that's likely to be Crawford's husband because the other two Thomases were under 20. Of course you would need to look at the death cert to check, and at Robert's birth cert, but it looks likely that Thomas wasn't Robert's father in which case it will be difficult to find out who was unless it names him on the birth certificate.
