What exactly would a dry salter do?

I have a marriage allegation for John Newton to Hannah Buckley where his occupation is given as "dry salter". The year is 1779.

Chambers' definition is "a dealer in gums, dyes, etc or (obs) in salted or dry meats, pickles, etc."
