I'm trying to find the maiden name for the wife of Charles Venning.

1911 census she says they have been married 31 years and have had 12 children all living. This is incorrect as I've found 16, two deceased. Checked all census from 1881 to 1911 plus birth reg and the South Derbyshire BDM site which helpfully says the parentage of the two deceased children.

I've found the death cert online of one of her sons and that gives her name as Jessie Newberry.

Jessie Newberry married Charles Martin not Venning

June qtr 1878 Burton 6b 417

In 1911 they are here

What am I missing here?

The most likely seems that Charles used two different surnames. Have you worked out the names of his parents?

Margaret in Burton
22-03-15, 10:38
No, I can't find him before 1881. Can't find her either as Newberry.

He was born 1857 in Launceston, Cornwall and she was born 1860 in either St Giles, Devon which looks to be near Torrington or Plymouth depending which census.

The Martin and Newberry marriage is on South Derbyshire BDM.

He's a joiner which is correct. Father Samuel Martin a joiner.

Hmmm, I had been wondering if these are his parents, but why would he them use his mmn?

I don't know as yet. Charles and Jessie's eldest was Charles William but all 16 kids were registered as Venning.

Yes - if he is William Charles Martin! I had to check that Samuel and Nancy didn't still have their son William with them in 1881 in case he wasn't the same person as Charles Venning!

The Martin and Newberry marriage is on South Derbyshire BDM.

I've never come across that site before and just had a look. It's great that they've done all those transcriptions and made them available online, but I do wish someone would tell them how to use apostrophes correctly!

Anyway, the marriage record on there (19 Apr 1878, Church Gresley) says Jessie Newberry, spinster, age 21, residence Church Gresley, father John Newberry, blacksmith, witnesses James Satchwell and Elizabeth Satchwell.

So this looks like Jessie's parents in 1881:

John Newberry 51, blacksmith, born Devonshire Lifton, with wife Susannah 53 born Cornwall St Peter??? and several children, living in Church Gresley, Derbyshire.

They are also in Church Gresley in 1871:

Yes, I've seen that. It's a brilliant information site but a bit clunky. You can't search all parishes at once you have to go through them all. That site confirmed the 16 children as the two that died have their parentage noted.
