I have Raymond George Ashley born 24/5/1923 White Shop, Clarendon, Jamaica and who died 26/12/1976, Isle of Wight. He was my cousins husband.

Is there any way to find out how and when he became an American GI during WWII?

I have no subs to anything so can't look on Ancestry or FMP.

This doesn't answer your question, but having had a read through your other thread about this family
http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19487&highlight=ashley

I see that Raymond's parents' marriage has now been indexed on FamilySearch and you can view their marriage cert image on there (you have to log into FamilySearch to view)

Jan 25 1920 at Ritchies in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica
Edwin Theophilus Ashley, bachelor, Cultivator, age 27, residence Sanguinetti, Clarendon, father John Ashley
Betsey Ashley, spinster, dressmaker, age 29, residence Sanguinetti, Clarendon, father George Henry Ashley.
Witnesses Samuel Morris, Leonora Peck.

I'll see if I can find anything about GI records now.

Oh, and here is Edwin Ashley's death certificate:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-33720-46085-85?cc=1538386

He died 16 Sep 1923 age 31, of consumption, informant is nephew Percy Ashley though of course Percy could be Betsey's nephew as she was also an Ashley.

Wendy, do you know when he left the US army? If it was before 1954 then his records are classed as "archival" and can be ordered from the US military archives:
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/archival-programs/military-personnel-archival/

but they say that a lot of the records were destroyed in a fire in 1973.

Also if he registered for the draft, it looks as though there are extra records you can order:

I can't find him on the site WW2enlistment.org, nor in the US Army enlistment records on ancestry. Did you ever get a copy of his marriage certificate for more information about his occupation, Wendy?

Another marriage on FamilySearch, which could be Betsey's sister:

7 Aug 1907 at Ritchies in the parish of Clarendon: Arthur Alexander Stewart, bachelor, Planter, age 25, residence George North, Manchester, father Henry Stewart, married Susan Isabella Ashley, spinster, Seamstress, age 23, residence Ritchies, Clarendon, father George Henry Ashley. Witnesses Alfred Alex Virtue, Ruth(?) Salmon.

Thanks for the info Kite, got most of it, apart from the other sister.

I haven't got his marriage certificate yet as he isn't a direct line and I have more important certificates to get 1st.

If Edwin Ashley was a Cultivator, does that he mean his family were probably from America and white? One of then had Jamacian ancestry, probably Betsey.
