Does anyone know anything about the history of the above property around the time of the 1911 census?

Having googled, I don't really know any more than what appears on the Wikipedia page here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_House,_Richmond)

In 1911 Frederick Bailey b 1887 Kendal, Westmoreland is living at the above address with several dozen other draper's assistants.

In the papers there are ads asking for people to apply to Miss Goodwin of Clarence House Richmond (or Kingston) for various service positions in "a large business house", but it doesn't make it clear if they are working at the property or living there and working somewhere else?

Any info much appreciated.

Kelly's Directory of Surrey 1913 (on Historical Directories website) has an entry under Kingston on Thames:
Clarence House Members Club (Messrs. Bentall's employees) (H. J. Harding, sec) Fairfield road.

A couple of pages before that is this entry:
Bentall Frank, draper, milliner, outfitter, ladies' tailor & costumier, house furnisher, furniture remover, bookseller, stationer, china & c 25, 27, 29, 31, 35, 37, 39, 41 & 43 Clarence street.

I was just marvelling at how I had managed to find something on the revamped site, but then I tried to get to what it said was the second match for the exact phrase "Clarence House" in that directory and utterly failed. :(

Finally managed to find the other match in that directory but it was a different house, at Hersham.

I stopped using the Historical Directories website ages ago (can't even remember why now!) and didn't know it was revamped! Sounds like it must be difficult now if you find in hard to negotiate - maybe that's why I gave up with it?

That's great info though, just what I was after!! Thanks Kate.
