Born on 16th April 1891, son of George and Eliza Jones, Harry was christened at Cuckfield, Sussex on 23 Jun 1891 when the family home was at London Lane. His father was a gardener and by 1901 was working for Major General Leigh Pemberton at Abbot’s Leigh off Lewes Road on the edge of Haywards Heath; the Jones’s lived in the Lodge House. Around 1911 Harry decided to make a new life in Canada, his parents and sister Rosina followed him in 1912 and in 1916 they were all living in Lansdowne, Manitoba where both father and son were farm labourers.

Harry had enlisted at on 25 Jan 1915 Minnedosa, Canada, aged 23 years 9 months, he had green eyes, with black hair and was 5’9’’ tall. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and had been awarded the Military Medal before his death on 16 August 1917 in France. It is not known where he is buried, but he is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
