Hi,

In OH's tree, we have Alfred Henry Meek born in Staunton, Worcs in 1854; son of Henry Meek & Harriet Annotts. I have the family on the 1861 census in Down Hatherley, Gloucestershire. However, after this census, I cannot locate the mother Harriet (who was born in Eldersfield, Worcs circa 1834) or 2 of the children, Alfred Henry & Mary Elizabeth born 1857. Also, Harriet had an illegitimate daughter Fanny Annotts (wrongly listed as Meek on the 61). She also disappears.

Henry and the remaining children stay in Down Hatherley.

I have found Alfred Henry on US and Canadian census from 1900 onwards and he appears to have married a Margaret around 1880. I think I have found him on the 1880 US census but he is not yet with Margaret. He claims on the Canadian census that he entered Canada in 1873 but have not yet found any passenger list for him. I wondered if his mother, sister and half sister went with him.

Would anyone be able to help locating the missing family members on the 71 England census, a passenger list for Alfred and any marriage for him to Margaret?

Many thanks in advance.

Alfred has been mistranscribed as Micek by ancestry on the 1871 census:

Hmm, there is also a Mary E age 13 in that household but her surname looks like Sack and it says "Not known where born" so I don't know whether it is your Mary Elizabeth.

Many thanks for the 71 census for Alfred. I guess Mary there could be his sister but you would have thought that Alfred would have reminded her that she came from Down Hatherley which is down the road from Norton. It could be her though.

Harriet the mother is a mystery. Henry says he is still married on the 71 and 81 census rather than a widow.

I haven't managed to find Alfred on a passenger list, nor his marriage to Margaret.

Here is Harriet in 1911, in the Gloucester Union Workhouse:

Thank you for looking for Alfred's passenger list to the US/Canada and his marriage.

That's interesting re Harriet on the 1911. I never actually checked the 1911 or 1901 for her after drawing a blank on the 71/81/91 censuses. So she's still Meek there.

A Mary Elizabeth Meek married a Frank Organ 17 May 1879 at Shurdington, Gloucestershire:

Mary is 20, spinster, father Henry Meek, labourer. Witnesses Daniel Organ and Martha Wiggin.

Here they are in 1881 with a daughter Sybil, but Mary E is still age 20 and born Herefordshire Weston:

and in 1901 she is 41, born Herefordshire Lea Baily(?)

I reckon it is your Mary and she just knocked a few years off her age to be younger than her husband, and she didn't know her birthplace very accurately.

Edit - no, sorry, it isn't her as there is a Mary Elizabeth Meek baptised 1860 at Weston under Penyard, Herefordshire, parents Henry and Sarah. She misled me with all that Gloucestershire stuff! Back to the drawing board...

oh that's a real shame about Mary Elizabeth. Lea Bailey is a place in the Meek tree as well. Mary Elizabeth's grandfather James Meek was born there.

The Harriet Meek death in 1923 has to be her. There is a burial of a Harriet Meek aged 89 at Down Hatherley, Gloucestershire in 1923. The abode given is Great Western Road, Gloucester. That's the address of the workhouse on the 1911 census. Interesting though that she's buried in Down Hatherley because that's where husband Henry was living when she wasn't present.

Hmmm, by chance I saw two marriages in the Stockport district of a Fanny Meek and a Mary Elizabeth Meek so checked them out on census and they both give their birth places as Down Hatherley, Glos. (Fanny in 1881 & Mary in 1891, she just says Glos in 1881). Ages all tally so must be them. No Harriet still though . So all 3 must still be somewhere on the 71 census.

It also states that he first arrived in Quebec in 1873 on the Peruvian.

Hi Shona, I had seen the 1918 list for him. Many thanks for finding the 1873 one to Canada for the Peruvian. I can't see him on there though :(
