I have the stupendously splendid name of
Whit Arthur Caradawg Gradwell
born June 1878 Prestwich 8d 473.
Lancsbmd also describes him thus.
How likely is it, do you think, that his name was really
Whittaker Gradwell, which is what I would like it to be.
OC
Hmmm, not that certain!
At least, not if you were thinking the Whit Arthur should say Whittaker as it's likely this is his brother, and he is properly Arthur:
Births Jun 1877
GRADWELL Arthur Caradawg Prestwich 8d 416
Deaths Sep 1877
GRADWELL Arthur Caradawg 0 Prestwich 8d 260
is it going to cause a problem if he died?
Whit Arthur C Gradwell

Ah yes, found the death, so that door is closed anyway.
Thanks Maggie, I am astonished that this family knew anything of Welsh literature etc - mother couldn't spell her OWN first name so it's quite hard to imagine her sitting down with a book of Welsh poems!
I think I got over-excited when I saw the odd name because this is a twiglet branch of a family with such common names (first names AND surnames) and I thought it might lead me along a new research path. Apparently not.
Thankyou anyway.

Interesting to note that on Lancsbmd, his death is registered in Barnoldswick, registers now at Preston. Not sure how that would translate to Skipton, Yorks, according to the GRO.

Skipton seems to have a sub-district called Barnoldswick:
SKIPTON REGISTRATION DISTRICT
•Registration County : Yorkshire West Riding.
•Created : 1.7.1837.
•Abolished : 1.1.1947 (to become part of Staincliffe and Ewecross registration districts).
•Sub-districts : Addingham, Barnoldswick, Gargrave, Grassington, Kettlewell, Kildwick, Skipton.
•GRO volumes : XXIII (1837-51), 9a (1852-1946), 2D (1946).
•Registers currently held at : North Yorkshire.
But that says the registers are held at North Yorkshire reg office rather than Preston.
This must be the family living in Thornton in Craven, Yorks (sub district Barnoldswick Reg District Skipton) in 1881:
Mark Oswald Gradwell 36
Elizabeth Gradwell 40
Margaret Anne Gradwell 15
Tom C. A. C. Gradwell 13
James A. Gradwell 12
Adlaide Gradwell 9
Victor Oswald Gradwell 7
Boadecia Gradwell 5
Caradsing Gradwell 2

Oh blithery heck! They aren't mine! There must be two families (or more).
That's what hopeful guessing does for you. Grrr. I was so desperately trying to get value from a ten quid will which is otherwise useless. ("My sister, Thamar Gradwell")

Ah right. I think.
Barnoldswick was historically in Yorkshire until 1974 but is now administratively in Lancashire. As the registers are now at Preston, then they have been transcribed onto Lancsbmd, even though the events they transcribe took place in Yorkshire, not Lancashire.
