View Full Version : Have we had this before?
FreeBMD:
Births Dec 1874 (>99%)
Mottram James Gildart Wolverhampton 6b 535
The above is a genuine entry.
Ancestry:
Name: James Gildart Mottram
Registration Year: 1896 Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
Registration district: Wolverhampton
Inferred County: Staffordshire
Volume: 6b
Page: 535
This is incorrect, but it does show a link to a page which is something I've not seen before when FreeBMD stuff shows on Ancestry incorrectly. However, the page is the wrong part of the alphabet. I've not seen this happen before and I've just spent forever looking for the 1896 person!! *sigh*
Yes!
There was a whole batch linking to the wrong dates. I thought it was 1917 or 1919, though.
Sadly, the Ancestry 1837-1915 births have a huge number of errors in. I think they have now corrected the 800,000 entries incorrectly recorded as Q2 1915, but I regularly find pages where large sections have not been indexed. I have myself conditioned to check on FMP or freebmd if I don't immediately find a birth on Ancestry.
It's not the difficulty in finding things this time, it's finding something that doesn't exist!
Thanks you two.

Well that explains things !!
lolol! Before I zoomed in I wondered if I was going to know what you meant!!

I deliberately didn't say :d
I've found one on ancestry the totally wrong year - can't remember who it was for though.
Finding the birth reg was 20 years off should have made things better, but.......
Charles Gildart Mottram married Hannah Pearman in Wolverhampton in Oct 1870. As far as I know they had two children -
Charles Martin Mottram reg Q3 1871 and
James Gildart Mottram reg in 1874 Q3.
In 1881 they are here (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/7572/STSRG11_2797_2801-0580/19441424?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3duki1881%26so%3d2%26pcat%3dROO T_CATEGORY%26MS_AdvCB%3d1%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26M SAV%3d2%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dangs-g%26gsfn%3dcharles%2bm%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gsln%3dmott *ram%26gsln_x%3dXO%26cpxt%3d1%26catBucket%3drt%26u idh%3d672%26cp%3d11&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults), with son Charles aged 9 but not son James.
When Charles Gildart Martin died in New Zealand in 1902 his estate was dealt with by his younger son, James Gildart Mottram.
Here's James going to New Zealand:
Jas Mottram 23 (abt 1874) 12 May 1897 London, England Wellington, New Zealand
and his parents following him:
Mr C G Mottram 17 Aug 1898 London, England Wellington, New Zealand
Mrs Mottram 17 Aug 1898 London, England Wellington, New Zealand
and this may be Charles jr:
Mr Chas Mottram 9 Jul 1908 London, England Wellington, New Zealand
The only entry for either of the sons I can see on the UK census is for Charles aged 9 in 1881, but I'd expected to find both of them on that census and the following one too and possibly Charles in 1901.
Can you add anything?

Think it's James with the wrong name?

Likely marriage Apr-Jun 1862 Wolverhampton, Richard Minifie and Emma Pearman.
Oh, well done Kate, thanks.
Poor little boy - I hope his aunt did really know his name! It's quite hard to imagine how that mistake occurred.
