I can't work out what's happening here........

Anna Hunt Mottram b abt 1827 at Alrewas, Staffs. Bap 11 Dec 1827 at Alrewas, Staffordshire, dau of James Seymour Mottram and Mary nee Lakin.

26 Jul 1868 Anna marries in St Peter's, Dale End, Birmingham to bachelor William Adams, labourer, son of James Adams, gardener. She is recorded as 36(actually more like 41) and he is 28.

The first census together is 1871:

He is 31 and she is 42 and he is a police officer born in Keele Staffs. No children.

I am quite calm up to here!

1841 census:

William is aged 11 months and living in Keele with his parents. Father is James, ag lab.

So, still calm, but here I get confused.

I didn't find any more census records for Anna and I wondered is she had settled in Australia:

I found this on Trove:

Australian Town and Country Journal, Sat 23 Jul 1881
JAMES SEYMOUR MOTTRAM, of Wolverhampton, England, last heard of 12 years ago from the Break of Day Diggings, Rokewood, Victoria - Your Sister Anna, lately from Home, is very anxious to hear from you. Address, Mrs William Adams, care of Mrs James Broadbent, New Lambton, near Newcastle, NSW. Any tidings will be gratefully received.

Just before I stopped looking in England I entered William Adams b Keele into ancestry search and there was one match for each census 1841 to 1891.

All the William's are the same age (give or take a year or so) but in 1881 and 1891 William is married to Harriet (we know Anna was alive in 1881 from the Trove entry) and has children who were b before 1871. I thought they might be step-children so looked at the 1871 census and Harriet and her children are there, with her husband, but now he is William Adams from Liverpool!

and they were married before William and Anna:

Marriages Dec 1865
Adams William Newcastle L. 6b 133 <<<<<<<<
Oulton Thomas Newcastle L 6b 133
Preece Harriet Newcastle L. 6b 133 <<<<<<<
Preece Harriett Newcastle L. 6b 133
Salmon Ann Newcastle L. 6b 133

So, I don't know what happened to Anna and I can't work out why the husband of Harriet Preece would say he was from Liverpool (fine) and then from Keele (not fine!).

And now I have to go and cook something.........

Ah, this family:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=uki1851&MS_AdvCB=1&rank=1&new=1&MSAV=2&gss=angs-d&gsfn=william&gsfn_x=XO&gsln=adams&gsln_x=XO&msbdy=1839&msbdy_x=1&gskw=keele&gskw_x=1&cpxt=1&uidh=672&msbdp=5&cp=11&pcat=35&fh=0&h=8276200&recoff=5+6&ml_rpos=1

also have a son Wm b Keele and he is in Newcastle Staffs where Harriet Preece married, so I guess he is the "other" William who thought he was born in Liverpool for a while.

So, what happened to Anna?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

There is an Anna Adams death at Hamilton, New South Wales, in 1893, parents' names James and Mary.

And I found this on Trove:
Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate, NSW, Wed 4 Jan 1893
Friends of Mr WILLIAM ADAMS are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of his deceased wife, ANNA: To move from the residence of Mr Thomas Baker, Narara-road, near Lay Church, Adamstown, THIS (Wednesday) AFTERNOON, at a quarter past 2 o'clock, for Adamstown Station, thence to Sandgate Cemetery, Wesleyan Section.
James Gray, Undertaker.

Just need to find something to confirm that this is the same Anna! Wikipedia does say that Hamilton is a suburb of Newcastle.

I bet it is though. Thanks you Kate.

I have another problem now, so another thread in a minute, if I don't get interrupted.....

I modified my search on NSW BDM to narrow down the date of death for the Anna whose parents were James and Mary, and it came out as 3rd Jan 1893 so it must be the same person who was the wife of William Adams.

She is listed as Hannah Adams on the Sandgate Cemetery website and there is a photo of her grave but no headstone. :(

Thanks very much Kate.

Her family (siblings) seem to have scattered themselves around the world. I'm off to New Zealand now!
