Who does Arthur Upton marry?

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fdev%2f100121875%2f00005&parentid=gbprs%2fdev2%2fmar%2f81017%2f1&highlights=%22%22

Second entry in 1584.

This is the visitation of Devon 1620:

The John who provides the information goes on to have another four daughters, so it may be presumed that he knows the names of his parents.

The end of the line is hard to read, but it reads as Catheren Fortesc.. to me

Thank you, Rick. That's what I thought. I think this must be a tudor mistranscription

I suppose the next question is: would a stuart woman after 33 years of marriage be riding around the countryside on a grey nag?

I have the death of a Gertrude Upton in 1614 & the death of an Arthur Upton in 1617. Unfortunately, his will, made in 1617, mentions a wife. Worse, he doesn't credit her with a christian name.

It doesn't seem likely, does it ? :) I've got a couple of unnamed "loving wife" problems in wills too, but luckily managed to solve them in other ways.

Somewhere in this thorny knot of relationships is Walter Rawleigh's Aunty Joan. Pedigrees of the Rawleigh family are made hellish by the fact that they all seem to marry three times, and all to wives with the same names.

There's an Arthur Upton marriage to a Mary Stradling in 1615 at Modbury, Devon (in Boyd's Marriage Index on FMP).

Ah. 14 Feb 1597 bur Mrs Gartery Upton.

That would give him enough time to look around for another wife.

But rather mean of a son not to mention a step-mother, even if that has no value in a pedigree.

Ooh, thank you Kite! I'd restricted my searches to Devon, forgetting Boyd did a lot of good stuff.

A little bit more compos mentis, I have found a victorian pedigree online.

In this Mary Stradling is his THIRD wife, with Catherine daughter of Hugh Culme slipped in between. This makes rather more sense.

It might also mean, when the poor clerk was wading through the paper registers in the 1590s, he saw the entry for Arthur to Gertrude, and thought it a dreadful error, as the man's wife was Catherine, so carefully corrected it?
