View Full Version : Reading PR on fmp (or knowledge of Staffs!)

I'm trying to read the place name for the residence of a family at a baptism.
The image of the PR is on fmp:

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007605020%2f00082&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbap%2f1246060&highlights=%22%22

In case that link doesn't work, here's how the entry is transcribed:

Lakins Gulielmus — — 1673 Staffordshire baptisms Alrewas, All Saints, Staffordshire, England

The entry is 3/4 of the way down the right-hand page and is the only entry for Jan 1673. It's easy to read except for the place....any ideas?

There's another entry for Samuel, son of Thomas Lakin 24 Dec 1671 which says the same place, if that helps!

It looks like Seyttils but Google insists that I mean Seattle if I try to search for it! Will look some more later but I have to go out now.
Edit - Or Scyttils?

On the previous image it looks like Scyttils.

Thanks you two. Now we just need to know where that is!

As he appears to be a churchwarden, I reckon it is a small estate within the parish.

Hmmm, I don't know if that helps at all! :o

Assuming Skittles would be the modern spelling, another one that it is useless to Google for!

Browsing through the Alrewas PR's, looking for any more occurrences of that place name, I have never seen a PR full of so much random stuff!

Ah, on the 1841 census Alrewas district 12 has the following description:
All the remaining Parish of Alrewas and containing the Sittells Brass Hay East Hill, Bagnalls the Sales lying Chiefly South within the Parish of Alrewas.

"The Sittells" could be the same place?

Okay, if you search on Google maps for Sittles Farm, Alrewas, it comes up as Sittles Farm, Lichfield, but it is nearer to Alrewas so I'm sure it must be the one.

It looks as though the name Lakin can vary quite a lot:

Merry, have you seen this will?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brett/wills/will_egough1815.htm

South Derbyshire Wills Collection
--- Elizabeth GOUGH née FROGGATT (1734-1815) ---
of The Sale, Alrewas

"...my said Son William and Samuel Lakin Innholder of Alrewas ... "

Thanks Kate, that's great! *googles*

Elizabeth, I don't know why that baptism says Lakeman for the father's surname as the PR shows it to be Lakin!

Yes I had, thanks. That Samuel is on my tree.

Well, I live very close to Alrewas and I've never heard of it.

Bagnall's is a coach company these day.

Lichfield has a place called Streethay, not Brass Hay.

I'll have a mooch around.

Try typing Sittles Farm into Google Maps

Sorry, Kate already said that

The farm is less than 3 miles south of Alrewas.

That's incredibly close to where some of my family were in the 1700s. Let me know if you come across the name Wilder or Willder. They lived near Streethay and used St Michael in Lichfield and St Giles in Whittington (neither of which were included in FMP's Staffordshire Collection unfortunately).

Hi Rick, I've not come across the name Wilder etc yet, but I will make a note! I happened to look on Family Search earlier today for any of my lot being baptised at Whittington, but there were no matches. I've only been looking at Staffordshire records for a couple of months - the previous decades of research have all been quite a bit further south!

I was distracted by an entry at the bottom of the right-hand page in Merry's link which reads '...first wife 28 children, and by his second wife 17 in all 45...grandfather to 86 and great grandfather to 97 and great great grandfather to 23, in all had 251 descendants.'

My OH has Wilner's from Lichfield.

Thanks Merry. Can't see any matches, but I'm going to revisit that line once FMP put the rest of their Staffs images online.

I'm having trouble priving it to my satisfaction, but my Wilders are probably from Derbyshire and seem to have arrived in Staffordshire via Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Then virtually the entire family relocatse to London and become Willder.
