John lives in South Newton, Wilts.

His first known child by Ann is bp 13 March 1742 (so possibly 1742/3)

I have a marriage: to Ann Miller 28 June 1739 at Orcheston.

It would be feasible: it looks as if Orcheston is less than ten miles as the crow flies, and we are talking Salisbury Plain.

But John's first wife is buried 16 January 1739. (Her last child bp 1 December 1738)

Of course, my notes give no hint as to whether the date is old or new style.

Can anyone see any other marriages? Or does the National Burial Index offer any clues as to the actual date?

The NBI shows Mary HORN buried at St Andrew's, South Newton, Wiltshire on 16 Jan 1739.

The Help states as follows:

Pre-1752 dates should be ‘New Style’, i.e. ‘1 Jan 1750/51’ displayed as ‘1 Jan 1751’. Data derived from Shroud should have been submitted as ‘New Style’, but the status of data from non-Shroud sources is not always clear.

You'd need to get a look at the original register to see if the date really is new style. My guess would be that it isn't, and she died a fortnight after the last child's birth.

Aha!

The OPC has transcribed it as follows:

1738/9 16-Jan / Horn Mary / Horn John husband

Thank you so much, Mary!

I have looked at the original microfiche more than once, but made no note on my tree. That makes sense (her dying close to the birth of her son) and means that the only possible remarriage I have found is now feasible!
