A question about Baptism/Christenings

Would both parents have to attend or could one of them take the children/babies. What would the church regulations be?

I have a feeling that it would probably be just the mother on most ocassions.

well I have a couple where the father is dead but it still says both parents names on the registration

I have lots of seamen in my tree and I can't imagine that their wives had to wait for them to be home from their travels before going to get the baby christened.

I have often wondered about this. A woman was supposed to be churched before she could enter the church after childbirth. This, I think, took place approx six weeks after giving birth. Pre 1800, the period between birth and baptism was only a matter of days. In those circumstances, would either parent be present? Might it have been godparents only?
