I'm stumped on a name in the will of Greffen Crutchfeild 1637 husbandman, Checkendon, Oxfordshire on Findmypast. After his children's names there's another name "my daughter's child". I think it's more legible in the registered will and I have an idea what the surname is but would welcome some help.

Cestian Curtes?

Thanks Phoenix, that's about what I made of it - I wonder if there was a shortened form of Christian in there but couldn't make it out

that's definitely an e after the c in the first name though isn't it?

Yes.

I've been juggling with it, as Christian makes much more sense, but I can't see any evidence of abbreviation.

Cestian Curtes?

On first sight I agree with Phoenix.

What wonderful names! You must submit this transcription as Dave Beames always comments on the exotic names I have had in my transcriptions.

Thanks - I'll have a look around and see if I can find anything. Unfortunately Checkendon PRs haven't survived until much later...

Have you looked at William snr's will? He has a daughter Kestian.

Thanks, Elizabeth - I haven't submitted any for ages and I should as I have a massive amount now. Been too deeply buried in this part of Oxon again:)

Oh. Cestian is a name though Chesten seems much more common.

William also appears to have sons Milburne and Hillary. I warm to him. Would my families have had such good names!

I like this lot too, although I did think Griffin/Griffith would be a real help when I discovered him only to discover there are three in the family and am struggling to identify which one is my ancestor. It's quite a common name in this are in the 16th and 17th centuries.
