I'm trying to establish whether this chap is my 8x-great-grandfather.

Jane Gill married John Andrew at Cocking, Sussex on 18th April 1704.
I can't find a baptism for her, but there is a Gill family at Cocking with father Lawrence.

So far I have the following as Lawrence's/Laurence's children:

Elizabeth baptised 23 April 1678
Mary baptised 22 February 1690 (mother Jone)

I also have the burial of Lawrence Gill on 28 August 1705, given as the son of Lawrence and Jane.

I think there was also a son John, as a John and Elizabeth Gill start having children in 1798.

The Gill family don't seem to have left wills, unlike the rest of this branch of my family, so no clues there.

My feeling is there must be a few baptisms missing - I know this was a turbulent period but I would expect a few between 1678 and 1690.

Oooh, thanks, Merry. It could well be. I'll have to search for Joans in case he had a daughter called Joan and a daughter called Jane, which I have found in some families.

Good point.

I can't seem to find any more baptisms. I wonder what condition the PRs are in?

It's odd, because I haven't been aware of any gaps for my other Cocking families, but that's probably because my direct line is accounted for.

John and Laurence's baptisms are definitely not there.

A century later, but I have found evidence of private baptisms not being entered in the parish register. Is it possible that that might have happened, or that they were baptised locally: Cocking seems to have good transport links.

It's possible, Phoenix. I need to return to Chichester to look at the registers, so it will be interesting to see whether the entries are rather sparse for the late 1600s.

Looking through the transcripts for Cocking, there are gaps in
baptisms Nov 1679-Jul 1685 and again 1689/90-1694 and
burials Sep 1672-Apr 1675; Jan 1680-Apr 1685; Sep 1685-Apr 1689 and Apr 1690-Jan 1695.
In addition to information already mentioned in this thread there is the following -
baptism 1651/2 3 Jan Joane Bacon dau of John
burial 1709 7 Jun Joan Gill wife of Laurence
burial 1737 17 Jun Ann Gill dau of John and Elizabeth, from Chichester
burial 1745 17 Oct Jane Gill, 'who died suddenly', Not of this parish
burial 1745 12 Sep John Gill, clerk of this parish

Sussex Maid, many thanks for this. It is so helpful to know where the gaps are.

Ooh, "Clerk" - was he vicar of Cocking? I already have James Barker, vicar of Cocking as my 6x-great-grandfather.

Doesn't look like it.

Did I just read that James Barker has a memorial in the church? There were three names of vicars on the Cocking Wikipedia page, but I hadn't noticed the name Barker until I came back in here.

Merry, there is a memorial to James Barker which I think I posted a link for before.

It's in Latin and is quite amusing.
