It could be that he wasn't baptised. I'll have a look later but have to go and eat now.

The nearest I can find so far is a James Edward Edgeway baptised 5 Jul 1857 at St James Curtain Road, Shoreditch, son of Thomas and Martha of 96 Curtain Road, father's occupation porter. His date of birth is given as Nov 11 1855 but his birth was registered Oct-Dec 1854, Bermondsey district. There are siblings Emily Louisa Martha born 1 Nov 1852, John Samuel born Oct 23 1853 and Thomas born May 27 1857 all baptised on the same date.

There is a James Edgeway death registered Jul-Sep 1885 Pancras, age 29, which more or less fits with James Edward's date of birth and with the birth of Maud, the youngest child with your James's widow Elizabeth on the 1891 census - Maud's birth was registered Jul-Sep 1885 Strand.

The only death I can see for Thomas Edgeway is Jan-Mar 1857 Shoreditch, a few months before Thomas and Martha's children were baptised but it could still be right. Baptism records don't always show if a parent is deceased.

Emily Louisa Martha Edgway married a Henry Ransom 6 Aug 1871 at Holy Trinity, Newington, father Thomas Edgway deceased. Two of your James's daughters were named Louisa and Emily, so I am wondering whether he was actually James Edward, brother of Emily Louisa Martha, and son of Thomas, and his father's name is wrong on his marriage certificate?

This is Thomas and Martha in 1851 with Emily down as Martha:

Widowed Martha is on the 1871 census on ancestry as Martha Edgeny. Her age has dropped a few years, but she has the right children with her (though they are also all slightly too young) and James' brother, John, is a bakers man. Martha seems to have died soon after:
