Hmm....did you prove this bap belonged to a different couple?

Father's Name: James Ryding
Mother's name: Ann Ryding

If that first James belongs to your couple, then this marriage is more likely!

Marriage: 8 Jun 1778 St Andrew, Leyland, Lancashire, England
James Ryding - (X), Weaver, Leyland
Ann Seed - (X), Spinster, Leyland
Witness: Peter Shawe; Ellis? Pearson
Married by Banns by: Thomas Baldwin Vicar
Register: Marriages 1766 - 1783, Page 135, Entry 434

I see there doesn't appear to be a burial for the James bap 1780 before the second James was baptised. I can sense you have already gone along this path! lol

Oh, this is odd......I copied the 1780 bap from Ancestry, but now I'm looking at Lancs OPC. There's no bap showing for 2 Apr 1780 at St Andrews Leyland, but there is this one:

Baptism: 2 Apr 1780 St Barnabas, Heapey, Lancashire, England
James Riding - Son of James Riding & Ann
Abode: Wheelton
Register: Baptisms 1771 - 1804, Page 10, Entry 5
Source: LDS Film 93951

So, have Ancestry got their knickers in a twist? To confuse matters further, James who married in 1784 was from Wheelton! It doesn't say that on the PR entry I posted earlier, but it does mention Wheelton in the banns records:

Banns: St James, Brindle, Lancashire, England
James Riding - weaver, Wheelton
Ann Walmsley - spinster, Brindle
First Reading: 15 Aug 1784
Second Reading: 22 Aug 1784
Third Reading: 29 Aug 1784; Read By: Rd. H. Wilson
Register: Banns of Marriage 1754 - 1790, Page 39, Entry 208

I can feel a headache coming on!

I think the children bap at St Barnabas, Heapey belong to a different James and Ann as they carry on having babies baptised there until after your couple have started their family at Leyland, so........back to the first marriage I suggested of James Ryding and Ann Walmsley. :D

Thanks for that, Merry; I'll have a look.

Found some baptisms on Lancs OPC at St James, Brindle:
17 Mar 1779 Mary Riding, daughter of James Riding of Hoghton
11 Mar 1781 Hannah Riding, daughter of James Riding of Hoghton
22 Feb 1784 Ellen Riding, daughter of James Riding of Hoghton

So they could possibly be the children of James Ryding and Ann Seed who married 8 Jun 1778 at St Andrew Leyland. Definitely causing a headache! There seem to be millions of James Ridings in the area.

Edit - although Lancs OPC doesn't seem to have a burial for 1784 Ellen but my James and Ann had an Ellen baptised in 1791.
