View Full Version : Thomas Atkinson,Dean Street,London
After posting details this week of gx3 grandmother Christiana Atkinson b 1788
I've returned to her parents Thomas & Mary Ann.
I've always thought they would be hard to identify as the names are common,
but I have a reference to Christiana's birth place being Dean St, Holborn & I
see there was a Thomas Atkinson of Dean St, Soho, listed in the 1802 Poll for
Middlesex. I've also found ref to an Atkinson's Hotel & Coffee house in the
same street at that time.Could anyone please advise me where I might go
from here?

There is another daughter, Maria Ann, baptised 9 Mar 1790, then a son Thomas 27 Aug 1792, address Dean Street for both of these. Mother's name is Mary on Thomas jr's baptism.
Then possibly another son - James 30 Nov 1794. Address is Hand Court.
Mother's name was written as Mary but the entry has been corrected: surname corrected to Atkinson from Atkins, and mother's name corrected from Mary to Mary Ann. There is a note in the PR saying they had an affidavit from Mary Ann, but doesn't give the date when this happened.

Hmm, just found the will of Thomas Atkinson Esquire of Dean Street, Saint Ann Soho, Westminster, Middlesex, written in 1803 and proved 1807, but his wife is Elizabeth and I can't see any mention of children on a very quick look through as I am supposed to start cooking the dinner about now:

He must be the freeholder listed in the Poll Book but perhaps not your Thomas.

Oh b*****! But thanks a lot anyway, Kite. I thought it might be too good to
be true.
Happy cooking!
Just found a ref to Dean Street, High Holborn, describing it as having been a continuation
of what is now Dane St, & running between Eagle St & Holborn, which I think is much
more likely for my Thomas than Dean St. Soho .
Oh well, back to the drawing board ...........
