but it may be a complete red herring.

Best mate's ancestor Clara Giffard is the daughter of William Giffard & Maria Mason.

William was b 1797 St Marylebone, son of Thomas Giffard & Elizabeth

a Thomas Giffard & Elizabeth Cross marry at St George Hanover Square 1792 with a witness Sarah Giffard.

Willmaking Sarah dies aged 77 in 1848 and mentions Mrs Maria Giffard, widow of William Giffard.

So far so good.

I got VERY excited when she mentioned John MASON butcher but he is one of those red herrings: son in law of her friend Thomas Bracegirdle.

But can anyone work out who "Jane Giffard, daughter of my brother Thomas Giffard" and "my niece Elizabeth Nicolson" are?

On the 1841 census it very clearly says that Sarah was NOT born in Middlesex, which isn't much help!

There is a Sarah Giffard baptised 4 Jan 1778 at St Laurence, Kent, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, according to FamilySearch. (And another one baptised 10 Jan 1768 at St Andrew, Holborn, daughter of Achilles and Hannah. )

There is a Thomas Giffard baptised 30 Jun 1772 at St Marylebone and another baptised 9 Nov 1766 at Margate, Kent. Both have parents called Thomas and Elizabeth. Also there is a Thomas and Elizabeth couple having children baptised at St Laurence, Kent, at the same time as the Margate couple. And I can't find Jane Giffard or Elizabeth Nicolson at all at the moment.

There is a Jane Giffard marrying someone Apr-Jun 1848 Windsor district, but I need to figure out who married whom:
Charles Baker
Ann Challenger
Jane Giffard
Elizabeth Harris
Joseph Lewis
Anne Makepeace
James Purnell
Thomas Weston
(from FreeBMD).

It would be typical if the young (or even not-so-young) woman married as soon as she had a bit of lolly.

I hate these people who die before 1851: they really were thoughtless! I even found some Scottish Giffards and I shall ignore the Thomas who married the Hon Charlotte Courtney and then scattered progeny all over London & Staffordshire.

I've been puzzling over this for some time but got nowhere!

There is a baptism of a Jane Giffard at St Mary, St Marylebone Road on 14 June 1761 (birthdate 29 May 1761) with father Thomas, but mother is Mary.

Ooh, well done Sue. Ancestry just isn't playing ball for me at the moment (and won't display the marriage either) but I now know the marriage is there.
