The York Medieval Probate Index 1267-1500 is a comprehensive index to over 10,000 wills and related documents proved in the province of York prior to the 16th century. Containing over 28,000 records, this new database was compiled from original documents held by the Borthwick Institute for Archives and is available online exclusively at Findmypast. While the majority of these documents relate to individuals with property in Yorkshire, 12.5% of the records refer to other places. Property in nearly every county in England, as well as Ireland, France, Poland, Scotland, Wales is referred to in these records. References to specific places primarily relate to property but can also detail an individual’s residence or place of death.

The index consists of various types of documents including the wills themselves, codicils (amendments) and disputes. Records generally list the testator’s name, occupation and any places associated with them during their life. They can also include the type of document, date of will, date of probate and the Borthwick Institute reference for the original document. Copies of the source documents may be ordered online from the Institute. It is important to note that before 1752, New Year in England started on 25 March.
