This is an excerpt from the will of John Shuckburgh, dated 1563 (anyone who saw the Alexander Armstrong episode of WDYTYA may remember this family).

I can decipher most of it, but I'm stuck on the name at the bottom left of this excerpt.

The rest reads "I give to Anne Shuckburgh £10, I give to Avice Shuckburghe £10, I give to Elizabeth Shuckburghe £10, I give to ? Shuckburghe £10, I give to Mary Shuckburghe £10. Also I give to Anthony Congarton.."

The best guess I can make at the missing name is Perseverance, but it doesn't look exactly like that. Any other suggestions?

By the way, I assume that "xli" means "£10", but please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is a link to the excerpt, because I don't seem to be able to post images. Is anyone else having problems?

Is it "ffrancs" - an odd spelling for Frances?

I suppose it might be; I hadn't thought of that.

I thought the first letter was the "p" with a squiggle over the top that's often used as an abbreviation for "pro" or "per".

It's two small fs - in other words F.

Yes, xli is £10. I usually transcribe it as it is. The li is usually written as a superscript.

Yes, looking at it again, I think you're right about the "ff".

Frances (or Francis) it is, then, thanks :)

And thanks for the confirmation about the legacies.
