View Full Version : Lister Snowden carpenter of Rothwell
Lister (or Lester) is born 1832, baptised in Rothwell, marries Sarah Walker, has a son Thomas Walter, moves to London, has two more children: William (Islington) and Emily (Battersea). Happy family in 1871.
In 1878 Clara Louisa Fanny Hewett marries a Lester Snowden. I cannot find this on Ancestry.
The birth of their son Lester is registered as Lester Snowden Hewitt in 1880.
Children are baptised into the mid 1880s in London, and Lester is a carpenter.
The 1881 census ought to have at the very least:
Emily Snowden b 1867 Battersea
Lester Snowden/Hewitt b 1880 East Dulwich Surrey
Clara Louisa Fanny Snowden/Hewitt b 1850 Islington
Lester Snowden b 1832 Woodlesford, Yorkshire, carpenter
and possibly Sarah Snowden b 1831 Burford, Oxfordshire and William b 1862 Islington.
Thomas Walter is a boarder all by himself.
I cannot find Lester's first family in 1861, nor can I find Lester's death.
Can anyone find any of the first or second family in 1881? That wierd birth registration leads me to suspect a bigamous marriage, but I can't believe that they are all living on Mars.

His marriage to Clara Louisa Hewett is on FMP. Islington Q2, 1878, Vol 1B, P623 as Lister Snowden.
Clara Louisa Fanny Hewett was bap 1850 in Islington. Parents George and Louisa.
1911, Lester Snowden 30 b Lordship Lane, Dulwich, with wife and children and mother, Clara 61 b Caledonian Road, Islington.
Looking at the poll books and electoral registers, Lester Snowden was at 17 Woodville Road in Stoke Newington in 1873 and 1875 (same street at the 1871 census) and then at 28 Millard Road, also Stoke Newington, in 1876, 1877 and 1878.
Then vanishes!
Clara is calling herself a widow in 1891.

Precisely, Shona. The dates do seem to be significant.
There is a death for a Sarah Ann Snowden, age 51, registered in Pancras district, London in the second quarter of 1878. Age is a bit out, but it may be Lester/Lister's first wife.

Lister and Sarah appear to have had another child.
Sarah Ann Snowden, baptised on 18 June 1864 - privately being ill - recorded at St Bartholomew, Sydenham. Parents - Lister Snowden, carpenter, and Sarah.
There is a death of a Sarah Ann Snowden registered in Lewisham district, second quarter 1864.
Children are baptised into the mid 1880s in London, and Lester is a carpenter.
I'm looking at the baps of Lester and Thomas Frederick on 24th June 1883 and the occ for father says deceased.
The baps took place at St Mary's Hornsey Rise and their address was 4 Albert Terrace, which is an address I can't find in 1881. Thomas Frederick Snowden was registered in Q3 1883 so must have been a newborn at the baptism. Doesn't leave a large gap for the death of Lester senr.

I saw those baptisms, too, Merry. They must be the two children with Clara, the widow, in 1891.
But...here is the marriage of Thomas Walter Snowden to Mary Beddoe in 1884 - father of Thomas is Lister Snowden, carpenter. Not recorded as deceased, though.

True, but that doesn't mean he wasn't. I suppose all we know is he was alive at his second wedding!! If he was the father of Thomas then he was alive for at least half of 1882. Maybe he did a runner at some point?
I wonder if Albert Terrace was a road in its own right, or a gaggle of cottages on a main road?
Everything slips away beneath my grasp and as Merry says, the only thing to be certain of is his presence at the wedding. Though if he had beetled straight off, I imagine that the name Lester would not have lingered in the family.
It is possible, of course, that a wife's death knocked him sideways, that Clara took in Emily, the ambiguity over Lester jnr's birth was a mix-up, there was another mix-up over recording details of the census and a third in forgetting to tell anyone that he had died.
Does that sound plausible?:D
Oh - two more baptisms at St Mary, Hornsey Rise.
22 December 1882 - Clara Louisa Snowden
26 December 1882 - Thomas Snowden
Lister/Lester is not listed as deceased for these two baptisms.
Here are those two baptisms:
