Mary Ann Trusler b 1823, Salisbury, Wilts marries William Hurst in Southampton and has two children:

William J BORN 1848
Mary Ann b 1850 both Southampton.

They all vanish off the radar until Mary Ann b 1850 re-emerges in 1869 to marry Thomas Cross, in Southampton.

A Mary Ann Hurst marries in 1854 to either George Allen or William Albert Chantry. Mr Chantry appears on several trees, but alas little seems to be known of him. I assume that "mine" is Southampton born.

Can anyone find out what happened to Mary Ann Hurst b 1850 in 1861? And her brother, who reappears in 1881 in Southampton, so I assume he is in Southampton all the time?

Okay, so William THOMAS Hurst may not have been in Southampton all his life. Aged 15, (so 1863 or thereabouts) he went to China on the Sarah Scott.

FamilySearch has the baptism of a James Chantry 6 Oct 1866 at St Mary's, Southampton, parents William and Emma, and I think this could be Emma in 1861 (married, no husband.) There is an Emma Keeping baptised 1829 at Sopley, parents Edward and Mary (the names of this Emma's children), and Sopley is not far from Christchurch where this Emma Chantry says she was born:
1861 census ancestry (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8767/HAMRG9_678_679-0052/8033796?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fMS_AdvCB%3d1%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1% 26MSAV%3d2%26gss%3dangs-c%26gsfn%3demma%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gsln%3dchant*y%26g sln_x%3dXO%26msbdy%3d1829%26msbdy_x%3d1%26uidh%3dv m5%26msbdp%3d5%26pcat%3d1861UKI%26h%3d8033796%26db %3duki1861%26indiv%3d1%26ml_rpos%3d3&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord)

So I reckon Mary Ann Hurst married George Allen. Unfortunately there are probably loads of those!

Isn't it likely that William Albert Chantry who married in Soton in 1854 is the same man as this?

William Albert Chantry bap 21 Dec 1828 St. Michael, Southampton, Hampshire, parents Richard and Catharine

and:

Name: William Albert Chantry
Registration Year: 1860
Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec

There is also a Keeping/Chantry marriage later on, so I reckon you are right, Kite.

Trouble is with towns like Southampton, men can just steam out and be never heard of again.

I'm not helped by William junior deciding he is a Hirst not a Hurst. At least he settles down and becomes a coal merchant. Off to hunt for a William Allen in 1861!!

Perhaps the 1860 death is a child not the husband (of Emma)?

Your William J Hurst seems to have been christened John William if I am looking at the right baptism on FamilySearch (25 Dec 1848, St Mary's Southampton).

Yes, Merry, though I think that Kite has sadly eliminated him.

There is a Mary Ann Allen death registered Jul-Sep 1856 Southampton, unfortunately too early for age at death to be shown on the index.

Thanks, Kite. I'd overlooked that.

Family search has the burial date: 16 Aug 1856

It doesn't seem to link it to a baptism, so it could well be my Mary Ann. Unfortunately, they don't even hint as to which parish/cemetery etc.

Lydia is the daughter of Charles Hurst & Elizabeth, baptised 1835 in Southampton.

1841 she is in the workhouse in SALISBURY with mother Elizabeth & sister Eliza aged 7.
1851 working as a servant in Sailsbury.

No. Though those Salisbury links teased me until I found Mary Ann Hurst, spinster.

And as the Truslers have a record for bad behaviour, it would have been in keeping :D

Hmm. Found William still alive in 1855, as a merchant seaman, giving Hambton Yorkshire as a birth place. This seems to be Hambleton in Brayton, West Yorks.
