View Full Version : What happened to Sarah?

George Hawkins married Susanna Moore 28 June 1838 in Hamworthy, Dorset.

Susan was heavily pregnant with Sarah Jane. I haven't found her baptism, but her birth is in the September quarter 1838, in Poole RD

Sarah is with her parents, aged 2 in Hamworthy in 1841. She is still with them in Poole in 1851. Then she vanishes.

The family moved to Portsea between 1856 and 1861. She could have upped sticks with them, or stayed behind.

I have found TWO Sarah Jane Pearces, both from Hamworthy: one marrying Thomas Musselwhite, the other Henry J Clench Pearce, but no trace of "my" Sarah Jane Hawkins.

My guess is that she would not have returned to Hamworthy and would have given her birth place as Poole or even just Dorset.

Can anyone see her?

I have found TWO Sarah Jane Pearces, both from Hamworthy

Should that say Hawkins?

Alas, no!

I've been looking for any Sarahs, born Hamworthy, in later censuses, and the only ones I can find are both Pearces. So unless one or both were widows, then they are red herrings.

There's Edward and Sarah Motley in Portsea in 1861. She is 23 b Poole. Can't find a marriage.

Prob not her as she is Sarah Ann in later censuses.

Thanks, Merry. Have been plagued by internet problems, so could not check immediately.

I do wonder if Sarah had an illegitimate child and died. She isn't on the 1861 census, but a mysterious Walter H Hawkins, son aged 5 is. It is possible that he is her son & thus her parents' grandson. I've been resisting this, but perhaps I should get his certificate.

Note that if I am correct, Sarah cannot be Walter's mother, as he was born in 1856
