View Full Version : Harriet Booth Allen 1871
George Allen, b 1823 Lichfield Staffs, married Harriet Booth in 1847 in Wolverhampton district. (Harriet b abt 1826 Wednesbury, Staffs)
In 1851 they are in Hull, Yorks with a dau Mary.
In 1861 Harriet says she is married but George isn't with her. She has a second daughter, Harriet b Hull, who was registered as Harriet Booth Allen in 1853.
Harriet Booth Allen married Charles Conyers Massy Baker in Bayswater in 1880. On the marriage cert her father is George Allen (occ esquire!).
Can anyone see Harriet (and/or her parent(s)) in 1871?
I've found George in Ockley, Surrey in 1861 (when both Harriet's are in Hull) and agan in 1881 when he is a widower.

George's probate says he was of Oakdale Ockley, but was formerly of 23 Colville Road, Kensington.

The 1873 Return of Owners of Land has George Allen owning 130 acres of land and gives his address as Ockley:

Until I found George in Ockley I had assumed he had died between 1861 and 1871. I suppose it's less important to find the 1871 census now.
Perhaps George and his daughter were out of the country in 1871?

I can't find Garratt's Farm on the 1871 census. :(
I used to have a client near Ockley. Of all the god-forsaken, out of the way places, Ockley takes the biscuit.
I assume it is in the Weald. The roads are long and rambling and took forever to get there.
And George CHOSE to live there?!!!

Perhaps the enumerator went down the wrong lane?:D

I found a reference on Google that says Garrett's Farm was on Ware Street, so I was going to quickly look up Ware Street on FMP but now I see why everyone is complaining about their new address search for the censuses. Will try later!

There were at Colville Road in 1881. He is recorded as a barrister who was born in Ireland.

They may be in The Peerage became Charles's brother was knighted.

Maybe. They seem to have their tree going back a long way on there for no particular reason that I could see.
Harriet Booth Allen is my first cousin 3xremoved on dad's side of my tree.
At her wedding one of the witnesses was Ella Octavia Mary Dartnell.
I already have Ella's first cousin once removed, Ellen Alice Checkley Dartnell, on my tree. Ellen was married to the third cousin of my first cousin 4xremoved on mum's side of my tree.
I think I did well to notice that, but I wouldn't have done so if it wasn't for the fancy names!! lol

Found an "uninhabited" on Ware Street, Ockley on the 1871 census, so maybe that's Garrett's Farm:

(I thought it would be quicker to browse through Ockley on ancestry than try to do a street search on FMP! And Ware Street seems to turn up quite a few times as you go through the first few pages, so probably just as well I did it that way.)
