John Doling of Romsey

I have a couple producing children in Romsey - John and Sarah Doling.

I have CDs for Hampshire and have looked at FMP but I can't find a suitable marriage for John and Sarah in county. I have dismissed one in the surname Dowling.

It's rather spooky, as we were in the New Forest last week and we visited Bramshaw and Eling, where my Hatch family come from. Since we got home I have been looking at my son-in-law's tree and found that some of his Londoners came from Hampshire and a whole swathe of them (Harding, Rogers and Kernot) came from Eling! We had a good nose around the churchyard too - shame we knew nothing of this lot then!

OH's 2xg-grandmother had her first baby at the New Forest Union Workhouse in Eling.

The New Forest seems to have been a pretty healthy place to live - most of OH's family seem to have brought a dozen children to adulthood - it's amazing there are any trees left - should be high-rise flats by now!!

I've looked in quite a few places for that marriage without any luck. Do you know John's occupation?

Merry, I hadn't thought about the mortality rate. You are correct, as very few of my New Forest ancestors had children dying in infancy.

I don't know John Doling's occupation so far, but if his father was George Doling this gives his occupation:

George Weekes Doling married Allice Lawrence on 3rd December 1751 at East Wellow.

Romsey is the sort of place that could pull people in from a fair distance away.

I have Wiltshire people stopping off at Romsey en route to Portsea. Have you looked at any victuallers' licences eg for Dorset to see if the surname crops up?

Thanks, Phoenix. This family seems to have been at Romsey some time if my research is correct, but I am mindful that people moved about a lot.

I have some of my Bramshaw family marrying in Wiltshire (it is right on the border) and it might be a possibility for John and Sarah Doling too.

Hi Liza, It was said that my Lett family from Carlow in Ireland were originally from Wiltshire (went over with Cromwell). I think I tried looking at Wiltshire records online but didn't have any luck. Is that just me? Julie

Ancestry has a Wiltshire Marriage Index which is pretty good (I think someone said it was a copy of the Nimrod Marriage Index?) but of course ancestry is down at the moment!
