Can anyone find this marriage in the GRO index or the bride and groom anywhere else (census etc)?

Name: William Roberis
Marriage Date: 1840
Marriage Place: St. Michaels, Bristol, Gloucester, England
Father: Thomas Roberts
Spouse: Joanna Griffith
Father Isaac Sage

I think Isaac Sage is my ancestor. I have three children for him born 1815-1820 but he wasn't too bothered about baptisms so I expect there are a few more children about. Quite a few other Joannas in this part of the tree. This Joanna should have been born in Somerset (Clutton, Chew Magna, Bishop's Sutton, Stowey all seem to be pretty interchangeable places of birth for other family members)

There's a possible marriage in Bristol in the 3rd quarter, but the spouse is Jane Griffiths.

lol I am going mad than because I can see that now!

Just found this:

Name:Joanna Sage
Gender:Female
Marriage Date:7 Sep 1820
Marriage Place:St. James Parish, Bristol, Gloucester, England
Spouse: Isaiah Griffiths

Seems a bit early, but I do have a pencilled in marriage for Isaac in 1799 but no children until 1815, so she could be the first-born.

You got the original entry from Ancestry, which gives the marriage date as 13/9/1840, so I should think the Jane Griffiths entry is correct.

That marriage looks good. I can't see a baptism for Joanna on familysearch or Ancestry, though.

This could possibly be them, halfway down the left-hand page:

A couple of possibles in 1851:

1851 census (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8860/GLSHO107_1947_1947-0125/17154831?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3duki1851%26so%3d2%26pcat%3d185 1UKI%26MS_AdvCB%3d1%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d 2%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dangs-c%26gsfn%3dj*an*%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gsln%3droberts%26 gsln_x%3dXO%26msbdy%3d1796%26msbdy_x%3d1%26uidh%3d vm5%26msbdp%3d5%26mssng0%3dwil*%26mssng0_x%3d1&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults)
think they are the couple that I posted in 1841

and
1851 census (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8860/GLSHO107_1952_1952-0194/17199470?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3duki1851%26so%3d2%26pcat%3d185 1UKI%26MS_AdvCB%3d1%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d 2%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dangs-c%26gsfn%3dj*an*%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gsln%3droberts%26 gsln_x%3dXO%26msbdy%3d1796%26msbdy_x%3d1%26uidh%3d vm5%26msbdp%3d5%26mssng0%3dwil*%26mssng0_x%3d1&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults)

lol I couldn't find one with the actual date on it, Mary!

Off to the cinema now, so will have a look at the 1841 census later, Kate!

Thanks for your help......

I'd just found the two census entries that Kate found; I would think the first one's probably right, assuming that Eliza Jane (20) is Jane (10) from 1841.

Hmmmm.....I think the 1841 and first 1851 census entries are the couple from the marriage, but Jane/Joanna may be the daughter of 'the other' Isaac Sage who lived in Bristol rather than in the sticks in Somerset. I've not yet worked out if they are one and the same or two people (after about five years! lol)

I will hang on to this info though as she may turn out to be mine after all.

Thanks both.

****puts hands over eyes because we can NEVER sort out Griffiths from Bristol****

Merry........stop now before you start finding Ariels amongst them.....lol

lol Libby! I will definitely put this on the very back burner then. My Sages are difficult and (to date) not very interesting, so I promise not to find any more marrying Griffith(s)!!
