Looking for this woman and her family prior to her mariiage, which is on Ancestry.

Her father was given as a sawyer. In later censuses she says she was born at Deptford. Was her father working in the dockyard? He could gave been from anywhere.

Gut feeling, with a name like Isabella, I'd be looking for roots in Sunderland or further north. There was a huge amount of coastal traffic between Rotherhithe, Deptford, Greenwich and the North East.

Thanks, Phoenix. We had thought along similar lines.

My daughter is researching her husband's family. Peter Fuchs (later Fox) was a German baker

I can't remember, Phoenix. Not at home, so no access to my records at present. I'll investigate though.

Mother's name Maria looks good as your Isabella has a daughter Maria on the 1881 census.

The James married to Maria is some kind of sawyer in 1861!

1861 census (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8767/SRYRG9_329_331-0532/6141154?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fMS_AdvCB%3d1%26db%3duki1861%26rank %3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d2%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dangs-d%26gsfn%3dmaria%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gsln%3dw*bs*r%26g sln_x%3dXO%26msbdy%3d1830%26msbdy_x%3d1%26dbOnly%3 d_F0005DFB%257c_F0005DFB_x%252c_F0005DFC%257c_F000 5DFC_x%252c_F0007B87%257c_F0007B87_x%252c_F0007B88 %257c_F0007B88_x%252c_F000597C%257c_F000597C_x%252 c_83004006%257c_83004006_x%252c_F0005DFD%257c_F000 5DFD_x%252c_F0007989%257c_F0007989_x%26uidh%3dvm5% 26msbdp%3d5%26gl%3d%26gst%3d%26hc%3d10%26fh%3d10%2 6fsk%3dBEDmZmYIgAAiPwEHrRY-61-&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults)

Think that settles it!

Oh, and there are possibles for Isabella on the 1861 and 1871 censuses as servant - in 1861 age 16 born Aldgate, in 1871 age 23 born London.

It occurs to me that Maria is probably a second wife. She is very young indeed to be Sarah Ann's mother.

Marriages Sep 1849
Beck Maria Newington 4 414
WEBSTER James Newington 4 414

This marriage is on Ancestry. Does it show James as a widower?

Yes, it does.

Very odd. Maria Beck b c 1831, Wandsworth is with father William Beck in 1851. Can there be two Maria Becks, born Wandsworth with fathers William? (I realise that she wouldn't be family, but she might be the reason for a family unit scattering.) Or William might just have listed all his children.

She is down as married, so I guess either she was visiting her parents or they just put down the names of all their children. But they forgot to put in her married surname! It must be the right family because William is a Block Cutter, and on Maria's marriage cert he is a Print Cutter. Also the witnesses are William Beck and Eliza Beck, and on the census the mother and one of the sisters are called Eliza.

I've just found your 1861 reference. So the family was always on the move. It would be a challenge to know where you had been born.

There are a lot of children baptised as sons and daughters of Charles and Dorothy Reed, mostly in Tower Hamlets, 1818 to 1835. One is for Sarah Ellen in 1823 and one has father's middle name Arthur in 1830. The last one (not looked at all) has father Charles, Gas Inspector.
