My Tasmanian disk (Kawaren) will not open, and I was wondering if someone can do a look up for birth of William Paul Walkley Green who I think was born about 1854 in Launceston. I believe he married Agnes Wilson Lamont in Victoria in 1886. I think also he was sentenced to death for some operation that went wrong??

Jood, do you have Ancestry? I found this.

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922 about William Green
Name: William Green
Birth Date: 25 Jan 1854
Father's Name: William Green
Mother's name: Annie Kallaman
Birth Place: Tasmania
Registration Year: 1854
Registration Place: Launceston, Tasmania
Registration Number: 443

Ancestry hooks him up (rightly or wrongly) with a William Green in
New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Coroners' Inquests, 1821-1937:

Name: William Green
Birth Year: abt 1854
Birth Place: Launceston Tasmaura
Death Year: Abt 1925
Death Place: Camperdown
Inquest Date: 4 Feb 1925
Inquest Place: City Coroner's Court
Age: 71

In the image, the coroner's verdict lists his cause of death as "Strychnine poison, usefully administered by himself."

Janet, thanks, no I don't have ancestry
I just know he was born in Launceston (and you've given me that information) and I discovered he'd married an Agnes Wilson Lamont in Vic 1886 (I think Agnes was born in Tasmania too)
Then he pops up as marrying Mary Kate Conway in 1877 in Victoria (who'd previously been married to Edwin Charles Smith who died in 1900) - she probably married him under the name Mary Kate Smith.
To make it all more puzzling, she changed her name to Kathleen Gertrude.
I saw somewhere where William Paul Walkley Green had been sentenced to death in Tasmania.
With a name like that ????? The name Isabella May Smith pops up too. A real mystery

There's this in the Sydney Mail of 24 March 1894.
Sydney Mail (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1302&dat=18940324&id=wzNVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=4pQDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3604,2748725)

And a blurb in Google books.
Google books (http://books.google.com/books?id=uTjOAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA643&lpg=PA643&dq=%22William+Paul+Walkley+Green%22&source=bl&ots=7I3vp-WrM7&sig=x9SUitBf9mA6mFtPd8zlEDxCfZ8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=UKGTU7PaD8eqyASJxoLQCA&ved=0CDwQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=%22William%20Paul%20Walkley%20Green%22&f=false)

I Googled "William Paul Walkley Green" in quotes.

And in Trove, the whole tragic story from The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), dated 1 February 1894:

Thanks so much Janet, what a bad man he proved to be.

I am still trying to work out his marriages - one to Agnes Wilson Lamont in Victoria in 1886 and then he's talking about another during the court case, then there was Mary Kate Conway who he supposedly married 26 Nov 1911 in St Phillips, Collingwood.

The death surprisingly in NSW seems feasible.

I'm still in a daze trying to take all this in!

Oh by the way, the Digger - Great War Index Vic 1914-1920 shows her dying as Marie Kleen Gerte (Mary Kate Conway) - aged 55, Melbourne east in 1918. Definitely her, as the parents are correct.

Jood, don't forget the Tasmanian Civil Registrations are on FamilySearch, just not indexed yet so you have to browse them:

Ok thanks Kate. I've just been told that Mary Kate's sister is supposed to have married in Tassie. (Amelia Conway - who was born 1859. I have her husband as Joseph, but that's all I know - I must have been looking them up in Victoria, where she was born.
