I am trying to find a baptism or birth record for a James Provis. He married Ann King from nearby Frome in Somerset 19 December 1781 at St Denys, Warminster.
He is referred to as 'Widower'.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Findmypast has the baptism of a James Proviss at Warminster 3 Jul 1774, son of James and Margaret, so it looks as though he could be the son of your James by his first wife? I will look some more later but have to go and eat now. What we would want to find is James's marriage to Margaret, Margaret's burial, and also James's burial, to give us an idea of when he was born.

James and Margaret also had sons John baptised 25 Dec 1777 and Richard baptised 4 Feb 1776, both at Warminster.

There is a James Proviss who married a Margaret West 1 Jul 1773 at St James Piccadilly, Westminster (London) but we would need to find something to prove it is the same couple. They are both "of this parish" on the marriage. I can't see baptisms of children of this couple in the London area so it is possible.

But - there are some Proviss baptisms at Warminster in the 1750's to a couple called James and Mary: Jane 30 Mar 1755, Sarah 17 Feb 1757, John 18 Mar 1759, another John 11 Jan 1761, Richard 25 Dec 1762, so I would expect your James to be related to this family. Ah, there is a James Provist baptised 10 Mar 1749 at Warminster, parents James and Mary. I should think that is him. (These are all from the "England & Wales Christening Records" on ancestry.)

Hi Kiterunner,
Many thanks for the input. I had looked at James and Mary and found all their children BUT James. I thought this was likely as I notice there was a daughter called Sarah (appears in family a lot).
I just couldn't find James. Well done!

Thanks for your help. I am wondering if there is anywhere I can access the Parish Records for St Denys in Warminster? Any ideas?

Wiltshire and Swindon Archives (http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/index.php)
If you can't get there in person, they say they sell copies of most parish registers on microfiche. Your local record office / archives or local history library would most likely let you use their microfiche readers to look at them. Or you could ask Wiltshire and Swindon Archives to supply you with copies of the particular entries you want to look at.

Also, Warminster has an Online Parish Clerk, so you could contact her to ask for help:
