I've been looking at a Berkshire ancestor's will of 1757 and am puzzled by what is meant by "the Bargain at Kintbury aforesaid called Slades".

Any ideas welcome.

It's always dangerous to assume anything. but it sounds like a property acquired by "bargain and sale"

Thankyou, that's not a term I've come across before Phoenix, I'm off for a quick google...

Or it could be a variant of "biggin" an old name for a cottage.

Another term I hadn't heard before - thankyou Nell

I think Slades is probably a property/building/house in Kintbury, although I guess you knew that.

I had a bit of a google, there's a Slades Hill several miles away, but too far to be "at Kintbury". He left property at Ecchinswell, Boxford & Woodhay too.
