Henry married Elizabeth Scott 19th Nov 1867 at Lymington, Hampshire.

Henry Phillips is recorded as aged 38 and a bachelor. His occ is cordwainer as is his father's occ. Father's name is Charles Phillips.

Elizabeth Scott is recorded as aged 18 (she was actually 16) a spinster, dau of Edward Scott, labourer. (Elizabeth was born in Boldre (not far from Lymington) in 1851 and was living there with her family in 1861.)

Witnesses are John Harper and Maria Cooper. I don't know who they are (I don't recognise the names, but have not investigated them)

Elizabeth Scott is one of OH's relations. OH has added some info on Henry Phillips stating he was killed in the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871, but irritatingly, he's not recorded a source for this info :(

So, who is Henry?

I have been unable to work out how to search individuals marital status on the fmp census since they've changed to the new search. I did manage to search 1861 with occs shoe* boot* and cord* none of which helped.

I know Elizabeth Scott stayed in America after Henry's death and remarried. I don't need more info on her.

I have just seen a tree on ancestry called 'Elizabeth Scott's tree' which includes an image regarding their arrival in Quebec in 1870. This gives Henry's age as 44 and Elizabeth's age as 22 when she was either 18 or 19. Perhaps I've not been looking early enough for Henry Phillips?

OOh, in 1851 there's a 62 year old Charles Phillips in Lymington who is a shoemaker.

You have to select the particular census you want from the A-Z and then you will get a "Condition" box.

On the passenger list showing their arrival at Quebec, Henry is down as a laborer, but so are all the men on the page, so it might not be accurate.

Thanks for that. I'm surprised they want you to type something in there - I tried unmarried and single, neither of which gave any results! Maybe I should be putting U for unmarried?

Yes that's what I thought.

Trying to eliminate the 1841 Henry and I found the following:

The entry is for 31-year-old William Phillips and his family. He was b Lymington, living in Southampton and working as a cordwainer.

On the 1851 census, this could be the Henry who Shona found in 1841:

Emma Phillips, the daughter of the older Charles Phillips (the one you found age 62 in 1851), comes up in the non-conformist records: Emma, daughter of Charles Phillips & Elizabeth his wife, was born Jan 13 1831 & baptized Feb 27 1831 - Independent church at Lymington Old Town.

But I can't see the rest of the children in there.

Thanks very much Kate - that's great! Good to get somewhere with him at last.

I wonder how OH found out about the Chicago fire? I expect that was someone else's research passed on to him.

This Charles Phillips is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Phillips bapt 10 may 1820 in Lymington, so quite probably Henry's older brother.

Possible marriage is Charles Philips (only 1 l ) to Elizabeth Kearley 28 Jan 1819 in Boldre, Hampshire.
