A very kind contact has just sent me a transcription of a letter that OH's great-great-grandmother wrote to one of her sisters in 1852 reporting her uncle's death.

It's full of details about the poor man's death, but is very compassionate in tone and tells of her staying with him and his wife and living with his widow after his death. She had a young family at the time.

How wonderful!

I remember reading a transcript of a letter describing a death, and then launching straight into all the parties she had been to. NOT compassionate at all!

That's lovely, letters are so immediate and personal. I've got a collection that were sent to my grandmother, including the ones my grandfather sent while they were courting - but he was not a great writer and I'm frustrated by all the things he doesn't say, like "My aunt in Brighton died some years back". WHICH aunt and HOW MANY YEARS BACK? Or "I had a postcard from my sister"(he had 5 sisters!).
