She is transcribed as Emie in the 1911 census, but if you view the image it looks more like Enid.

Thanks Margaret & Elaine :)

I've been off chasing her Uncle John and using free bmd but didn't think to look for her on there....

Thank you :D

Poor Enid - 11 years of mistranscription....

If anyone fancies a challenge I'm trying to see where the first daughter to that family came from:

the parents are Robert Laurence Randall (b 1860Q1 Holt) & Clara Mary Wills (b1855 Norwich)

They married 1881Q1

1881 census:
RG11 1924 folio 100 p21

There is a step-daughter: Winifred Weir aged 4

in 1891 she's listed as Winifred W Randall
in 1901 Winifred W Weir

Clara's maiden name appears to be Wills

where did Winifred come from?

I can only think that she was the daughter of Clara and a Mr Weir and that she took her father's surname even though her parents weren't married. But I can't see a birth registration for her under either surname!

That's what I thought Kate, and it seems the most likely but I wondered also about adoption... would an adopted (taken-in) child be listed as 'step-daughter' or do you think that the term would only apply if she was the natural child of one of the parents?

She is actually recorded in the 1911 census as Winifred Wills Weir - not that it helps much!

Thanks anyway Elaine - 3 surnames to choose from to search for her... I'm very glad that she's only a tiny twig on my tree!!! I'll just put what I have in my notes and leave her be now.
Thanks again :)
