Sue from Southend and I established that Jane Ann was living with Robert Hodges in 1861, married him in 1862 and was still with him, plus Emma b 1865 in 1871.

http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=11849&highlight=lanning ?

I assumed that they all dropped down dead, but a friend has found Robert, widowed, blacksmith b St Lukes in Holborn Workhouse in Mitcham in 1891.

Which raises the question, where were any of them in 1881?

She hasn't spotted them, nor have I. Can anyone find any of them?

I thought both Robert and Emma died in Poplar, but they ought to be in the Holborn area.

I can't see where that 1871 census entry is mentioned on that thread, sorry, so just so we have it to hand to give us birthdates and birthplaces etc:

3 Gresham Place, St Giles without Cripplegate, London
Robert Hodges Head Mar 48 Blacksmith Middlesex St Lukes
Jane Do Wife Mar 34 Brace Maker Do Marylebone
Emma Do Daur 6 Do St Lukes.

Robert is still in the Holborn Union Workhouse in Mitcham in 1901, age 81, widower, blacksmith, born St Lukes, so I suppose he is the Robert Hodges whose death was registered Jul-Sep 1902 Croydon district, age 80.

It never seems right that Croydon is the RD for Mitcham, but yes, I imagine you are right, Kite.

The location of the Holborn workhouse in Mitcham came about in 1885, so wherever Robert was in 1881, it was probably somewhere in London.

So is this the right Jane in 1911?

1911 census (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2352/rg14_09610_0303_03/52706141?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3d1911england%26h%3d52706141%26 ti%3d5538%26indiv%3dtry%26gss%3dpt%26ssrc%3dpt_t38 246580_p20477414495_kpidz0q3d20477414495z0q26pgz0q 3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid&ssrc=pt_t38246580_p20477414495_kpidz0q3d2047741449 5z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid&backlabel=ReturnRecord)

Jane Ann Hodges age 73, widow, number of children says none but is crossed out, born George St W, London Westminster, living 113 Calderon Road, Leytonstone.

(I didn't find this myself but clicked on a link from a public ancestry tree)

It's all looking very interesting Phoenix! I'll have a trawl through the Holborn Poor Law records on Ancestry to see if I can find any clues as to whether he belongs to my family!

It may have to wait until the weekend though :(

Very frustrating - I've found Robert in the Creed Register for Mitcham which shows that he was admitted 22 May 1890 but nothing else. The more detailed records for that year seem to be missing (they have the periods either side, of course :rolleyes:) I'll keep going through some of the other records just in case.

Hello know this is an old tread but I found where Robert Hodges died 17 August 1902 in the workhouse Mitcham, Croydon Surrey. On this discharged it says "dead". He was admitted 22/05/1890 with John Hanscombe also born 1821 (that name is familiar??).

~~~waves to Kangaroo~~~
I suspect that John Hanscombe was simply someone else unfortunate enough to need the help of the Workhouse.
Poor man, over ten years is a long time to spend in the Workhouse.
